What would be a good theme for an orchestra concert? It would be nice to have the pieces all tie together and be an incentive for people to come listen. Chamber to full symphony, choral pieces with orchestra as well.
A "Theme" isn't a necessity for an orchestral concert, but the folks who market the orchestra and sell the tickets to generate income for the group really like "theme" concerts.
Some "themes" for concerts can be pretty obvious. A Fourth of July Concert full of patriotic music can be called "Wave the Flag" or "Stars and Stripes" or something of the sort. A December concert can be called "Christmas Presents" or "Winter Wonderland."
If all of the pieces in a concert are related to opera (arias with a guest soloists, ballet from operas, opera overtures, etc), you might bill this as "A Night At The Opera."
I just read today about a community band in the Washington DC area whose next concert will feature small ensembles from within the band -- a flute quintet, a bassoon quartet, a brass quintet, and the like. They're calling this concert "Intimate Winds." Similarly, an orchestra might do half a concert with pieces for winds and percussion only (Copland's Fanfare for the Common Man; Gounod's Petite Symphonie for Winds, etc.) and call it "No Strings Attached."
I play in a community orchestra whose next concert includes music by Edward MacDowell and George Gershwin. They're both American Composers, so the concert is advertised as "Made in America." If all the composers in a given concert are from the same city or country, you can figure out a theme name for that as well:
Play Mozart, Beethoven and Bruckner and call it "A Century in Vienna." Play Carlos Chavez, Ernesto Nazareth and Heitor Villa-Lobos and call it "South of the Border."
I once attended a community band concert with the theme, "Far Away Places." They played that old popular standard to begin and end the song. The rest of the music had something to do with exotic or distant locations: "South Pacific," "In a Persian Market," "Hands Across the Sea" and so on. I know of other groups that have done a similar concert, but called it "Around the World in 80 Minutes," and used the theme from the film "Around the World in 80 Days" in the concert.
One orchestra always called their first concert of the season the "Conductor's Showcase." The conductor selects some of his favorite music, with an eye toward showing off various sections of the orchestra.
A community band in the same area did their own version of "Conductor's Showcase," in which they had former directors of the band, and band directors who were players in the band, all conduct one number each. Their "Conductor's Showcase" was a showcase featuring all their conductors.
You can start with the list of music, look for some unifying thread among the compositions, and use your imagination to find a "theme name" that fits that thread. Or you can use almost any catchy phrase, and then select music to fit the theme. Just use your imagination. Write down all your ideas, and assume that no idea is a bad idea. You'll come up with some ideas that will work for your group.
